WHY LIDAR?

Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) sensing is a geospatial measurement tool that has exploded in popularity in recent years, thanks to major improvements in quality, accuracy, reliability, and cost.

Unlike passive camera-based methods such as photogrammetry, LIDAR is an active sensing method - meaning data is captured “as-is” with minimal processing to generate accurate results.

Scan densities are typically in the range of 200 - 500 points per square meter- dense enough to make out thin, small features such as telephone poles, transmission lines, and tree branches. Thanks to the impressive scan density, LIDAR can “shoot between” individual tree leaves, capturing ground features and measurements in canopied or forested areas where ground measurements are especially difficult to obtain.

Additionally, LIDAR works in complete darkness, allowing inspection at any time of day. In the hands of a qualified UAV LIDAR operator, large acreages that previously took days to scan can be completed in a matter of hours. Harkin Aerial’s pilots use the unique SLAM-based Hovermap system from Emesent to create accurate models of buildings, bridges and tunnels - without the need for continuous GPS or time-consuming field calibration.

THE HOVERMAP DIFFERENCE

Harkin Aerial exclusively uses the Hovermap system by Emesent to provide high-quality LIDAR scanning in virtually any kind of environment. Because Hovermap’s SLAM-based data collection is independent of the UAV’s built-in GPS, Harkin Aerial can safely scan in areas other UAV service providers cannot - such as mines, large interiors, or GPS-denied environments such as under bridges, within building canyons, or beneath cell towers.
